J-1 English Assessment Requirement

The U.S. State Department requires that all J-1 scholars have sufficient English ability to have a successful academic program in the U.S.  In order to be sponsored for a J-1 visa by UGA, all applicants must submit prooof of English ability.  There are three ways a scholar can prove English ability.

  • Submit an approved test score from an accepted English language test, OR
  • Submit proof of earning a degree from an institution that instructs in English, OR
  • Complete a video interview with the UGA College of Education J-1 Scholars and Faculty and be rated at a Level B-1 (low independent user proficiency)
