UGA student receives scholarship for internship abroad

Athens, Ga. — University of Georgia sophomore Dieu Thao Nguyen has received study abroad funding and been named the Hiliary Echo Douglas Memorial Scholar by the Fund for Education Abroad. The scholarship will fund her upcoming internship with the University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

Nguyen's plans abroad include studying the Vietnamese language and culture, interning in the obstetrics and gynecology department of the university, and learning about the dynamics of the country's hospitals — all of which is important to her goals of becoming a physician and establishing a medical clinic in rural Vietnam. To follow Nguyen's journey, visit her profile on the FEA website.

FEA funds scholarships of up to $10,000 each for study abroad, and the 2017 awardees were selected from a pool of nearly 1,500 applicants representing approximately 440 colleges and universities across the country. This year, FEA granted 51 scholarships, totaling $225,000, to U.S. students who are consistently underrepresented in study abroad — this is double the number of scholarships and $75,000 more than was awarded last year.

The students receiving FEA grants come from a variety of racial, ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds and represent higher education institutions across the country. Students will be studying across the globe, from a minimum of four weeks to a full academic year. This year’s 168 scholars include minority, LGBTQI, first-generation, community college, and students studying in non-traditional destinations. This year, 88% of the students are of minority backgrounds, and a large majority of scholars (84%) are first-generation college students. Almost all (98%) awardees will study their host country's language.
